Egyptian Art, Writing, and Science
Sculptures
Egyptians sculptures were usually made to symbolize Egyptian gods, pharaohs, queens, and kings. This way, the Egyptians could show respect to their rulers. Their main purpose was to give eternal life to their kings and queens hopefully someday allowing the people to see them in their physical forms.
Pottery
Many Egyptians used steatite to construct pottery that was usually used when burying the dead. Some Egyptians had even figured out how to use enamel when making these pots. Different forms of pottery were used in the tombs of the dead. Many times, the organs of the deceased would be kept inside of these small pots during the mummification process.
Hieroglyphics
The Egyptians had constructed a working writing system call hieroglyphics. This was a series of pictures that stood for certain letters or pairs of letters. It could be deciphered from left to right or right to left, different from our usual left to right reading.
Papyrus
The papyrus plant, which can be found in ancient lower Egypt, helped the Egyptians to write more efficiently. They found that it was of much better use than the common stone that was originally used to write on. It was easy to carry and durable enough to visibly show the the Egyptians' hieroglyphics. The Egyptians used the pulp of the papyrus to make paper-like sheets. Once they were dry, the sheets made a great writing surface. Writing is still visible on papyrus today, even after thousands of years.
Egyptian Math
The photo shown here represents Egyptian math. This a geometry math problem written on papyrus, which was used by the Egyptians as writing paper. The Egyptians knew how to subtract, add, divide, and multiply numbers. The picture is proof that the Egyptians knew geometry quite well. Without the use of geometry, the Egyptians would have never constructed the pyramids so precisely.
Egyptian Science
The greatest scientific advancement for the Egyptians was in the medical field. The Egyptians were masters at human anatomy. Doctors used this knowledge to cure people at home and at temples specifically used as healing centers. They could set broken bones, treat wounds, and perform surgical procedures like removing tumors. To cure the simpler illnesses doctors used medicine made from a variety of plants and animals.
