Spartan Society
Equals
The first group of people in Spartan society were known as equals. they controlled the city state. Land was divided equally among these citizens and their families.
Half-Citizens
Spartan Society's second group of people were known as Half-Citizens. They were free, paid taxes, and served in the army. Half-Citizens, however, had no political power. Some half-citizens farmed. Others lived in the towns, where they worked in trade and industry. Some Half-Citizens became rich.
Helots
Helots made up the third and lowest group in Sparta. the helots became the slaves of the Spartan city-state. The Spartans decided how the helots should work and live. However, the helots greatly outnumber the Spartans.
Government in Sparta
Kings
In Spartan government, there were two kings that took on the role of "leader". One king led the army. The other king took care of matters at home.
Council of Elders
A Council of Elders was made up of 28 male citizens over the age of 60. They were usually wealthy, aristocratic men. The council proposed laws and included all male citizens over the age of 30.
Life in Sparta Military
Birth to Death
Sparta controlled the lives of its citizens from birth to death. The goal was to make every adult male citizen part of the military. The Spartan military worked to control the helots and to expand Spartan power.
New Borns
The development of Spartan fighting men began at birth. A group of officials examined newborn babies. Any child who seemed unhealthy was left to die.
